Top 10 Dividend Companies To Own In Right Now

LONDON --Micro-chip designerARM Holdings (LSE: ARM  ) (NASDAQ: ARMH  ) has long been a stock market darling. The huge rating that it traded on 10 years ago has been fully justified by its recent profitability.

Will buyers today be rewarded in the long term?

ARM has probably been the U.K.'s biggest beneficiary of the smartphone boom. In the last five years, its shares are up almost ninefold. In that time, dividends per share have more than doubled.

Its booming profits will be sure to attract competitors to its market. My concern is that, in the long term, shareholder returns could suffer as a consequence.

ARM currently trades on a 2013 price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 46.3 times expectations. The shares would fall hard from here if growth were to slow at any point in the next few years.

Hargreaves Lansdown
Investment shop-windowHargreaves Lansdown (LSE: HL  ) dominates the U.K. market. The company continues to exploit its first-mover advantage, yielding impressive returns for shareholders.

Advisors' Opinion:

The case for First Security Group (FSGI) is interesting. It is bank holding company that is obscure, cheap and unloved. As the company completed the recapitalization earlier this year, I think the market has been under-appreciating its potential to return to growth and profitability as a result of the much-needed recapitalization.

First Security Group (FSGI) operates as the holding company for FSGBank, which provides banking products and services to various communities in Tennessee and Georgia. This stock closed up 6.5% to $2.29 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.16-$2.30

    52-Week Range: $1.30-$7.45

    Tuesday's Volume: 80,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 509,606

From a technical perspective, FSGI ripped higher here right above some near-term support levels at $2.14 to $2.12 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of FSGI within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if FSGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.38 to $2.52 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $2.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FSGI as long as it's trending above some key support levels at $2.14 to $2.12 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 509,606 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then FSGI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from June that started at $5.08.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Crane (NYSE: CR  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Crane doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 0.6%, and inventory decreased 2.4%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 2.8%, and inventory contracted 2.4%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 0.4%, and inventory grew 2.0%.

Like its parent, Seadrill Partners is based outside the US, and like several other marine transportation partnerships it has chosen to pay taxes as a corporation. In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

If there is some semblance of a bright spot here, it's that the FDA recently approved a new class of diabetes drug by Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) known as Invokana. Rather than working from the pancreas or liver as previous diabetes medications had, Invokana is an SGLT-2 inhibitor that works in the kidneys and allows a person to excrete excess glucose through the urine. The drug not only provides improved glycemic balance, but it's also been shown to induce weight loss and lower blood pressure -- two fantastic benefits for patients who are overweight or obese.

Novel antibodies and viral treatments show promise in making significant progress against various types of cancer, but aren't the only way to approach a cure. Doxil from Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) was developed decades ago and was the first cancer treatment to protect its active ingredient in a fatty envelope, or liposome. This Trojan Horse approach slowed the chemotherapy drug's release, reduced toxic side effects, and was a huge step forward in advancing treatments. . While Johnson & Johnson has been facing a supply shortage of Doxil, the company stated in its last quarterly report that it is planning on using a different manufacturing approach to continue marketing this drug.

Last, but certainly not least, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) made waves by announcing the acquisition of Aragon Pharmaceuticals for $650 million upfront, with the potential for an additional $350 million in royalty payments, to get a hold of its clinical-stage metastatic prostate cancer drug, ARN-509. The move is particularly intriguing because J&J already has an FDA-approved drug for advanced prostate cancer in Zytiga. This could signal J&J's expectations that the prostate cancer market is growing rapidly enough that it can accommodate what could wind up being a few potential blockbuster treatments without getting overcrowded.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt Thalman]

Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) ended the week as the Dow's biggest loser, after falling 2.81% during. As with Chevron, Merck reported disappointing earnings, as revenue dropped 4% compared with the same quarter last year and missed Wall Street's expectations. Although earnings per share hit $0.92, which beat estimates, they also were down against last year -- to the tune of 35%. The company also gave lackluster guidance and reported that one of its best-selling drugs, Januvia, saw sales drop 5% during the quarter. That in itself certainly rattled a number of investors. Merck has already lost a number of patents in recent years, and to see a protected drug begin to stumble is not a good thing. Shareholders should certainly keep an eye on this development in the coming quarters.
