Google to Retire Checkout, Transitions to Wallet

Over the next six months, Google  (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) will retire the Google Checkout platform and developers will have to redeem purchases through Google Wallet. For a year now, Google Play customers have used Wallet to make their purchases.

Google says it's making the shift to help merchants "benefit from the growing consumer adoption of mobile commerce." As consumers purchase from multiple devices, Wallet seems to best adapt to developers' and customers' needs.

While most app developers will undergo a seamless transition to Wallet, some developers will see the following changes:

Sellers of physical goods or services will no longer be able to use Checkout after Nov. 20. Google is providing discounted migration options.  Google Checkout for the Notifications and/or Order Reports software will need to migrate to replacement software before Nov. 20. The replacement software will be available through Google Play.

Developers that sell apps or in-app products in Google Play will soon have access to the new Wallet Merchant Center. There, they'll have access to new reporting and analytic features. Other developers will see the switch to Wallet over the next several weeks.

The most disappointing investment in the portfolio for 2013 was InterDigital (IDCC). This stock declined approximately 28% during the year, despite posting roughly 25% operating margins. Our thesis on IDCC is that the company should benefit from its wireless technology patents as more smartphones and mobile tablets are connected to the in ternet. IDCC creates wireless technology, applies for patents for the technology it creates, and then licenses its technology to manufacturers who produce the aforementioned products. In the past, Nokia, Samsung, Apple, LG, and many other manufacturers hav e licensed the company's technology to use in their products and paid IDCC royalties.

Steve Helber/AP There's dough in breadsticks and green in bottomless salad bowls at Olive Garden again. Parent company Darden Restaurants (DRI) posted better-than-expected quarterly results after Tuesday's market close. Sales from continuing operations rose nearly 5 percent to $1.56 billion, with adjusted earnings more than doubling to 28 cents a share. Both marks landed just ahead of the $1.55 billion in sales and profit of 27 cents a share that the pros were forecasting. However, the big headline number in Darden's report is that Olive Garden managed to post its first quarter of positive year-over-year growth in comparable-store sales in more than a year. Olive Garden's 0.5 percent uptick in comps may not seem like much It didn't keep pace with inflation or with what some of its casual-dining rivals are reporting, but it still snaps a streak of five quarters of negative comparable-restaurant sales growth at the once-fading Italian restaurant chain. Olive Garden Outsmarts Red Lobster Darden has a lot of young, exciting concepts. There's the beer-heavy Yard House, tropical Bahama Breeze, and health-conscious Seasons 52. There are also plenty of steakhouses, ranging from LongHorn on the casual end to the premium chophouse havens of Eddie V's and The Capital Grille. However, the lion's share of Darden's restaurants until earlier this year was Red Lobster and Olive Garden. The two chains combined for the majority of Darden's business, and when both concepts were struggling, they were dragging the parent down with their sloppy performances. Darden sold off Red Lobster earlier this year, and it seemed as if Olive Garden would be the n! ext major! concept to go if it didn't shape up. After all, Red Lobster was performing horribly, but Olive Garden wasn't doing a whole lot better. Despite Darden owning several concepts, Olive Garden still accounts for 57 percent of the company's total sales, accounting for 838 of Darden's 1,520 eateries. As Olive Garden goes, so go

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Richard Levine/Alamy The "When you're here, you're family" casual-dining chain had a rude awakening at its annual family reunion Friday. Activist investors won the proxy battle at Olive Garden parent Darden Restaurants (DRI), and now, we'll all get to see if the boardroom purge delivers results or makes matters worse. Friday morning's tally at Darden's annual shareholder meeting wasn't a huge surprise. Investors elected all 12 of the directors that hedge fund firm Starboard Value nominated, leaving the eight nominees that Darden brought to table out of the boardroom. Starboard had just an 8.8 percent effective stake in the restaurant operator, but it had been raising a stink in recent months about Darden's sloppy performance. Its displeasure culminated in a 294-slide presentation that took Darden to task for everything from not generating a high enough price for the sale of Red Lobster earlier this year to the lack of alcohol sales at Darden's LongHorn Steakhouse. Most of the presentation's critiques were directed at Olive Garden, where some of the widely circulated gems included calling the chain out for being too liberal with its breadsticks and salad dressing,! failing ! to add salt to the water before boiling pasta, and having too many choices on the menu. Bored of Directors Darden's woes center around the weakness at Olive Garden, where comparable-restaurant sales have fallen for five consecutive quarters. Darden also runs LongHorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, The Capital Grille, Eddie V's and Yard House, but all of those better-performing chains still combine to make up a minority of the revenue mix. With Red Lobster out of the picture, Olive Garden now accounts for 57 percent of Darden's top-line results. Darden executives had lost Wall Street's confidence due to the pronounced weakness at Red Lobster and Olive Garden. The resignation of its CEO wasn't enough of a sacrificial lamb for activists seeing marinara-red over the fall from grace at

Upstream MLPs like BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP) and Legacy Reserves (NASDAQ: LGCY) produced the oil and gas. There was a huge new requirement for sand in the fracking operations, and this encouraged new MLPs like Emerge Energy Services (NYSE: EMES) and Hi-Crush Partners (NYSE:HCLP) — both of which have more than doubled in price over the past 12 months. Here's a glimpse of healthy foods and trends I think we'll be tasting more of in 2015: 1. Riffs on Hot Veggies For the past couple of years, people have been asking me what the "next kale" is going to be. Cauliflower gave it a solid try this year, but it didn't quite have the crowd appeal that kale has commanded. But perhaps in 2015 we'll get another sizzling hot vegetable in the form of kale sprouts, also known as kalettes, BrusselKale and lollipop kale. Kale sprouts are a cross between red Russian kale and Brussels sprouts, and look like a tiny head of kale. Their flavor is peppery and their texture crisp. You can use them like you'd use kale -- in salads or sautéed with olive oil and garlic. We're also set to see more availability of vegetables, like rainbow carrots and broccoflower -- a cross between cauliflower and broccoli -- that have previously been limited to farmers markets. 2. Up ! in Smoke According to "Supermarket Guru" Phil Lempert, we'll be seeing lots more smoked foods in the coming year. Smoked salt made its debut about five years ago, and the trend has been gaining steam ever since. Lempert says we'll be seeing smoked vegetables, butters and even cocktails in 2015. 3. Bitter Beckons Americans seem to finally be getting over their love affair with all things sweet and are experimenting with the alluring bite of bitter. From craft IPAs to Negronis and straight up bitters, we've been getting our acerbic on at the bar. According to restaurant consulting firm Baum and Whiteman's annual trend report, we'll be seeing bitter chocolate, more bitter greens and bitter coffee used in savory dishes. Plus, turmeric -- the ancient anti-inflammatory spice with a strong flavor and deep yellow-orange color -- continues to show up in teas and other beverages. 4. 50 Shades of Green Baum and Whiteman declare that pistachios are the "nut of the year" for 2015. Perhaps it's due to those wacky Stephen Colbert commercials or their Mediterranean origins,

ADP Predicts Big June Job Growth, and Short-Sellers Destroy GoPro's Rally

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  )  inched up 20 points Wednesday, but all Wall Street cared about is the big official June jobs report due out Thursday morning, just before the stock market closes early for the long holiday weekend.

1. ADP predicts 281,000 new jobs in June
The number of the day is 281,000. Not only is that the number of situps in Cristiano Ronaldo's bench press-less morning workout routine, but it's also the number of new jobs that payroll-tracking firm ADP announced that the U.S. added last month.

Is that good? Good question. ADP's figure is well above the 200,000 economists expected. Plus, the number of new construction jobs brought the industry's total to its highest level since '06. Although U.S. GDP has surprisingly fallen so far in 2014, the solid jobs numbers are a sign that the underlying economy is strong and the manufacturing and production sectors were just temporarily affected by the tough winter.

The takeaway is that these ADP figures are worth tossing some extra bacon on your burger, though they are just an estimate. What Wall Street really cares about is the official number of jobs added last month according to the U.S. government. The Labor Department will announce that number on Thursday morning, just before the holiday traffic begins.

2. Short-sellers ruin GoPro's stock price after four-day rally
I wish we had GoPro'd that insane run that GoPro (NASDAQ: GPRO  ) made in its first days as a publicly traded company -- because it's over. Pessimistic short-sellers who worship the religion of Schadenfreude made sure to fix what they saw as over-excitement about the popular camcorder company, so they sold stocks and nailed the price, sending it down 14% Wednesday.

Short-sellers borrow stock from their brokers so that they can sell it. The plan is to buy it back in the future at a lower price, so these naysayers will profit if GoPro's stock price falls. In the short term, reports came in that it was almost impossible to borrow GPRO stock Wednesday, because so many traders were shorting it.

Why all the hate from Wall Street? Because the company made $60 million profit in the past year and its market cap (the number of shares times the share price) has already ballooned to over $5 billion in the first days of trading. Since last week's IPO, the company has risen 31%, 14%, 13%, and 20% in its only days trading on Wall Street.

The takeaway is that GoPro has a lot to prove. The major selling of the stock Wednesday shows that there are a lot of very skeptical investors out there. Are there enough snowboard-riding and skydiving adrenaline junkies to make GoPro the profits it needs to satisfy investors?

Twitter Inc. (TWTR): 3T Analysis - #TimeToBuy?

Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR) got cracked following earnings that disappointed Wall Street last quarter, but the earnings driven freefall was just a continuation of the stock slide after posting an all-time high of $74.73 in December 2013.

For the last month or so, the price has flattened out while trading between $30 and $34ish; a mini-consolidation phase, but there's been something different of late. As you can see on the chart below, bargain buyers have started to accumulate TWTR as illustrated by the large green bars.

The recent spate of buying pushed the stock out of the consolidation phase and turned the 12-day average's trend higher, putting it on a path to bypass the 26-day mark. We've seen this look thousands of times, and it usually leads the stock to its 50-day benchmark.

[Related -Twitter Inc (TWTR) Q1 Earnings Preview: It's As Easy As 1-2-3 Metrics]

The 50-day is a tough barrier to break, but $40 appears to be a more natural point of resistance. The odds favor Twitter printing $40 sooner than later, in our opinion. From there, $45 would be the completion of a triangle pattern. Forty-five bucks is a high probability if investors bid TWTR past $41, again, just our opinion.

On chart two, you can see the 140-character social site's trading range has narrowed considerably since the start of June. From our experience, stocks tend to make substantial moves following a tight trading range. The spoils will belong to whichever side of the channel breaks first.

[Related -Tech Stocks Pull Back: What to do? Nothing.]

As it is today, Twitter closed near the high achieved on TWTR's earnings-driven gap down day – May 6, 2014. The day before, the stock closed at $38.75 and then $31.85 on the 6th with a high of $36.10.

If/when Twitter closes above $36.10, then it should begin the process of closing the gap-down, which would place stock in the neighborhood of the 50-day average; confirming our analysis up-top.

Momentum, as defined by Rate-of-Change is building for Twitter; however, the five-day and 15-day ROC readings are bumping into resistance. But that's OK because the trends for all three levels on the chart below are trending in the right direction for bulls.

Longer-term, the 25-day ROC shows TWTR's upswing should have some staying power. A rough day or two should be greeted by more green bars as bulls buy the dips.

Overall: Twitter Inc.'s (NYSE:TWTR) charts suggest shares could touch $40 – maybe more – in the not too distant future. Of course, TWTR will need some help from the overall market. If the indexes go into correction mode, then it would make the task more difficult, but still more likely than not, in our opinion.

Top Industrial Conglomerate Companies To Buy For 2014

In July of 1996, Charlie Munger gave a speech entitled ractical Thought About Practical Thought? which presented the case of a man who is asked to plausibly demonstrate a business plan that will cause a new corporation with an initial investment of $2 million in 1884 to grow to a value of more than $2 trillion over the next 150 years (by 2034), while simultaneously paying out a large portion of its earnings as dividends. With fifteen minutes to make your pitch, how would you approach this problem?

Charlie answer to the problem (I highly recommend reading the speech) culminates in the following conclusion: despite many follies along the way (like granting exclusive bottling rights across most of the United States in 1899 to two young lawyers from Chattanooga for the rincely sum of just one dollar in the words of Don Keough), the company in question was on track to meet its target by 2034 if it increased its value by just 8% per annum (remember, this speech was made in 1996; at the current valuation, the market cap will need to increase closer to 12% per annum) that company is the Coca-Cola Company (KO).

Among exporters, Honda Motor Co. (JP:7267) (HMC) and Toyota Motor Corp. (JP:7203) (TM) shares tacked on 2.4% and 1.5%, respectively, and Hitachi Ltd. (JP:6501) (HTHIF) shot higher by 4.8%.
