5 Best Media Stocks To Invest In 2014

Could the merger battle between the Justice Department and would-be partners American and US Airways be headed for a settlement?

The three parties say they've agreed on a mediator, who will attempt to facilitate a settlement resolving the government's lawsuit to block the proposed merger.

But if they can't settle, the sides are preparing for a trial scheduled to start Nov. 25, The Associated Press reports.

The airlines' CEOs have consistently stated that they're open to a settlement, though the language used by Justice in its suit did not sound as though it left much room for middle ground. American CEO Tom Horton and US Airways' CEO Doug Parker have declined to discuss details of any negotiations.

The airlines and the Justice Department said in a court filing Monday that they have agreed to a mediator suggested by a U.S. district court judge in Washington. They gave no other details.

Finally, satellite TV provider DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) tacked on 6.9% after its first-quarter results also easily topped estimates. Thanks to $1.38 billion in share repurchases as well as the addition of 604,000 net subscribers, DIRECTV reported a nearly 8% increase in revenue to $7.58 billion as EPS increased to $1.43. Analysts, on the other hand, had expected $7.53 billion in revenue but just $1.10 in EPS. The key for DIRECTV is in the differentiation from DISH Networks, which is allowing consumers more choices and helping to increase average revenue per user in a very challenging economic environment. Still priced very reasonably, DIRECTV's run higher may not be over.

While its biggest competitor is embroiled in an M&A battle with giant Japanese banks and telecom juggernauts, DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) continues to dominate at its core business. In the just-ended quarter, the company added another 583,000 subscribers in Latin America -- that small, extremely populous region of the world that other cable providers glossed over when glancing at their corporate-strategy edition Rand McNally. In the meantime, North American revenues are rising healthily as well, proving that the company not only gets customers in the door but upsells them as well. The market has rewarded it with new 52-week highs and a healthy valuation, but is there still room left to run? Let's take a look.

Early on Monday morning, Gannett (GCI) had its price target raised to $35 from $34 at FBR Capital. The ratings company also affirmed that Gannett is a “Top Pick.”

Gannett, a publishing and broadcasting company that operates in the U.S. and the U.K., currently has a price of $29.76, and FBR’s new target suggests an 18% upside.

FBR analyst William Bird had the following comments about GCI’s PT raise: “Based on our analysis, we estimate that Gannett’s spectrum is worth approximately $2.2 billion, or $9 per share, roughly doubling in value from theacquisitionof BLC (i.e., pre-deal valuation of ~$1.1 billion). Separately, we are lowering our 2014 EPS estimate by $0.07 to reflect the previously announced sale of three stations to MDP (note: an expected midyear close means that the stations will not be in operating results from January 1, but the proceeds will not be received until midyear). We are increasing our price target to $35 from $34 to reflect shareholder accretion from the sale. We like Gannett’s improving business mix, growth profile, and ability to drive growth with its own propeller through higher retrans, synergies, and potential TV acquisitions.”

Gannett stock was inactive in pre-market trading. So far this year, the company’s stock is up 0.61%.
