Last month, the company agreed to pay $2.65 billion to buy the Longview Timber business from Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM ) and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE: BIP ) . By selling, Brookfield will be able to reinvest proceeds into areas that are more consistent with its current focus. The company’s book value per share rose 7.6% from the beginning of the year to $122,900.
The company saw a $322 million gain on investments, better than the prior-year’s $81 million gain, and a $300 million gain on derivatives, versus a year-earlier $693 million loss.
Total revenue for the company from all its holdings was up 16% at $44.69 billion.
Total assets rose to $446.56 billion from $427.45 billion a year earlier.

In filings it was reported that Bridgewater owned just under $3 billion in the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index ETF (NYSEMKT: EEM), $3.3 billion in the SPDR S&P 500 Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY)�and about $3.6 billion in the Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEMKT: VWO). The Vanguard fund, for example, has an expense cost of an extremely low 0.18%, which like all funds is deducted from the net asset value. You can see it in the performance numbers. For 2013, to date, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) was down 9.30% while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF was up 21.01%. Quite a trouncing for an emerging market index that was up 69.9% in 2009. From 2002 to its peak in 2007, the emerging markets index was up 320%.
