Top 10 Investments For 2014

Nu Skin (NUS) has dropped 44% since China’s People Daily alleged that the company’s selling practices amounted to a pyramid scheme. Yet even as Nu Skin drops again today, the conversation is turning back to where it belongs–to Herbalife (HLF) and what Nu Skin’s troubles mean for William Ackman’s bet against seller of nutrition products.

Bloomberg News

In “China’s Nu Skin probe may help Ackman’s Herbalife Bet,” Reuters sent a reporter to find out–despite the fact that Herbalife’s 12% three-day drop suggests it already has. From Reuters:

For some investors and academics, the Nu Skin scrutiny raised the chances that Chinese regulators might soon broaden their probe to look into Herbalife, whose global operations includeChina.

“Thebusinessmodels of these two companies, Nu Skin and Herbalife, are absolutely similar,” said William Keep, dean of the School of Business at the College of New Jersey, who has written extensively on multi-levelmarketing. “And it would not be a large leap for Chinese officials to make that they should also look at investigating Herbalife.”

Dow 16,000, S&P 1,800, and Nasdaq 4,000 didn't become reality today, but each of these benchmarks came close to reaching those respective levels as investors continued to respond favorably to the macroeconomic and monetary-policy environment going forward. But despite the market's broad gains, Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA  ) , Maximus (NYSE: MMS  ) , and Western Union (NYSE: WU  ) gave up ground today with fairly substantial drops. Let's take a closer look at why these stocks bucked the market's favorable trend today.

This is where one of my favorite plays on the healthcare reform comes in. Maximus (MMS) provides cost-effective processing services to government health and human services agencies in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Saudi Arabia. One of its main focuses is healthcare, providing administrative services for many programs, including Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicare.

Analysts at Jefferies initiated coverage on business process services provider Maximus Inc. (MMS) late on Thursday, giving the stock a bullish rating because it has several competitive advantages and should benefit from the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

The analysts rate MMS as “Buy” and see shares reaching $47. This price target suggests a 20% upside to the stock’s Thursday closing price of $39.14.

On Monday, Goldman Sachs upgraded the whole steel sector from Cautious to Neutral and specifically upgraded small cap and mid cap steel stocks AK Steel Holding Corporation (NYSE: AKS), United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) and Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) to Buy with price targets of $6, $30 and $22, respectively, but should you go for one of these individual steel stocks or for the Market Vectors Steel ETF (NYSEARCA: SLX)? To begin with, Goldman Sachs says that thesupply-demand fundamentals for steel are starting to look more appealing as some supply has been taken out plus they have a very bearish view on input costs (as in iron ore)which bodes well for steel producers in the long run. Moreover, recently filed trade cases could provide some tailwindif they are successful.Of course a rising tide can lift all ships, but Goldman Sachs suggests that you go for the followingsmall cap or mid cap steel stocks:

In our late October report on X, we noted the Company was “scratching the surface” on operational improvement, and we expected shares to edge higher over the near term. While X shares have appreciated by 16% since that report vs. the S&P 500 of +4% and the [Market Vectors Steel ETF (SLX)] of +3%, we believe shares have more room to run based on our positive carbon hot-rolled steel pricing revisions for 2014: meaningful raw material cost tailwinds (coal, scrap, iron ore); low Street EPS and EBITDA expectations for 2014-2015; an ever-increasing interest rate environment (benefits for pension exposure); more evidence of European macro stability; and above-average likelihood of incremental operational efficiency announcements such as a joint venture or tolling agreement with Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Damian Illia]

A Delaware corporation formed in 1994, ResMed Inc. (RMD) is a global leading designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical products for the diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and other respiratory disorders. For the quarter ended in Dec. 31, 2013 ResMed reported a 2 percent increase (a 1 percent increase in constant currency basis) in revenue over the quarter ended in Dec. 31, 2012. However, these earnings failed to meet analyst estimates; and not without a reason. A relatively poor performance was expected due to continued pressure in the United States, especially as a consequence of the market's restructuring due to competitive Medicare bidding. This might also be one of the reasons why this stock still remains undervalued.

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is medical equipment player ResMed (RMD), which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect ResMed to report revenue of $400.01 million on earnings of 64 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for ResMed is extremely high at 25.6%. That means that out of the 139.26 million shares in the tradable float, 35.89 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 5%, or by about 1.72 million shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of RMD could easily trend sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, RMD is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and just below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. Shares of RMD have started to flirt with a near-term breakout trade today, since the stock has tested some past overhead resistance at $48.07 a share. That move is starting to push shares of RMD within range of triggering a much bigger breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on RMD, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $51.22 to $51.32 share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.17 million shares. If that breakout hits post-earnings, then RMD will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from October of 2013 that started just above $56 a share. If that gap gets filled with strong upside volume flows, then RMD could easily trend north of $60 a share.

I would simply avoid RMD or look for short-biased trades if after earnings

ResMed Inc.(RMD) seems like a solid growth stock, but March sales reportedly were aided by a quarter-end deal with a large customer, while profit was boosted by noncash accruals, according to Barron’s. The strains evident in march-quarter results may grow, if Medicare and other insurers decide to pay a bundled price for continuous positive airway pressure treatments. Shares slipped 3.8% to $50.49 in recent trading.

Innovation: Innovation is a major priority at AT&T. And so far, it looks like the company is making savvy moves, particularly with its push into the cloud. To this end, AT&T has rolled out NetBond, which involves alliances with top providers like IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT), CSC (CSC) and Equinix (EQIX). But perhaps the most interesting growth initiative is Digital Life, which allows customers to use their smartphones as remote control devices with homes and cars.
