10 Best Oil Stocks To Own Right Now

In the energy world, it's never much of a surprise when an oil company picks up natural gas assets or vice versa. But a coal company getting into the oil business? Now that's a rarity. This week, Natural Resources Partners (NYSE: NRP  ) did just that. The company announced that it's taking a working interest in some of Abraxas Petroleums (NASDAQ: AXAS  ) assets in the Bakken. While the $35 million purchase was not that large, it's a rare case where a coal company branches out into other natural resources.

Since Natural Resources doesn't have the access to the export markets like some of the larger players in the coal market, it actually makes sense for this coal company to branch out. In this video, Fool.com contributors Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy discuss why this kind of move could make sense for some domestic coal producers.

For investors looking to capitalize on a rebound in the U.S. coal market, exports are the name of the game. Nearly every major coal company in the US is looking for precious export capacity, and Peabody Energy is no exception. With big holdings in the U.S. as well as Australia, Peabody could be a prime candidate to fuel Asian coal demand. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The reason for the disconnect between earnings and stock performance has to do with the changing fundamentals for shipping overall. For years, shipping companies both on the dry-bulk and the tanker side of the industry have suffered from weakness in the global economy after having built huge numbers of new ships during better times. That forced Overseas Shipholding Group to seek bankruptcy protection late last year and has left tanker giant Frontline (NYSE: FRO  ) under considerable financial pressure as it continues to labor under a substantial debt load.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Oil tankers could also see a benefit as well. With potential of the SUMED pipeline being shut down, it would mean that tankers would need to increase traffic by 2 million barrels per day and increase its shipment times as much as LNG tankers.Norway'sFrontline (NYSE: FRO  ) , the world's largest oil tanker fleet, has day rates of about $25,000 for its oil carriers, so it's not as much of a win as LNG carriers. Also, higher fuel prices for all shipments will eat into that revenue boost.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Frontline (NYSE: FRO  )
Shares of Frontline, a transporter of oil and oil products, as well as coal and iron ore, shot higher earlier this week despite no specific news. Many investors might remember Frontline as a company that paid out a double-digit yield as recently as a few years ago. However, the landscape of the shipping sector has drastically changed, and even at just $2 a share it's no longer the value it once was.

It's time alone at the top didn't last long; its industry peer LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) recently announced that it too was moving to monthly payouts. LINN Energy basically created the oil and gas MLP space when it went public and it has been delivering both income and returns to investors ever since. Last fall while Vanguard was implementing its monthly distribution policy, LINN was busy creating LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) which has really become a game changer for its business model.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  )
Investors in LINN energy are no strangers to the role acquisitions play in giving the company the ability to raise its distribution. Along with its announced acquisition of Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) in conjunction with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) earlier this year, LINN announced a sizable boost to its distribution. While I wouldn't expect to see any mention of another dividend increase this quarter, what we might see is confirmation that the company is switching to a monthly distribution.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The only other option to fund these capital needs is to form foreign joint ventures, which could jeopardize our dream of energy independence, or simply unload mature oil and gas assets. That last option has opened up a hidden opportunity for upstream oil and gas MLPs such as LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) andVanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) to consolidate these mature producing properties.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Two-thirds of the reserves are located in the midcontinent, which are well-known for holding great MLP-type assets that have long life and low decline. Peers like LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) and Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) each has a substantial presence in the midcontinent region. Eagle Rock's reserves there have a heavy natural gas component; gas is 64% of these reserves. However, Eagle Rock has an exciting oil play in the region, which I'll get to in a moment.
