In the video below, Fool contributor John Reeves takes a look at just how valuable it could be for the biggest banks in America to be considered "too big to fail."
John compares different studies arguing for and against the idea that just being viewed as too big to fail means banks can borrow at artificially low interest rates, which results in a de facto subsidy worth billions. John suggests that this is an effect big banks are looking to downplay. Could this effect actually be worth billions to the biggest banks, such as Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) , JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM ) , and Citigroup (NYSE: C ) ?
Citigroup's stock looks tantalizingly cheap. Yet the bank's balance sheet is still in need of more repair, and CEO Michael Corbat still needs to prove himself. In response to the outrage at highlighting a terrorist instead of his victims, including 26-year-old MIT cop Sean Collier, who was killed in the shootout between the Tsarnaev brothers and the police, and 8-year-old Martin Richard, who was standing next to one of the bombs when it detonated, retailers including CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS ) , which operates 7,300 stores nationwide, Walgreen (NYSE: WAG ) , with more than 8,500 stores, and Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD ) chain Kmart have all decided not to sell the new issue of the magazine.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
Preliminary results show decent success with Walgreen's strategy. During April, same-store sales rose 1.2%, with larger gains of 4.7% in pharmacy sales pointing to customers returning to Walgreen's fold. May's increase in comps of 2.8% showed the same tilt toward the pharmacy side of the business. Yet, rival CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS ) has also given investors some positive news, guiding earnings and revenue last month to the upper end of previously provided ranges amid favorable impacts of greater generic-drug availability. Despite Walgreen's success, CVS remains a strong competitive threat, especially with its combination of pharmacy benefits management and retail drug stores.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Carroll]
Not all stocks are up today, despite the surge. Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) just can't find its footing. The stock has lost about 0.6% today, although Travelers has been as good a bet as any on the Dow over the past year: In that time, the stock has gained more than 47%. CEO Jay Fishman pointed out how falling bond yields have pressured the company's investments, pushing it to raise insurance coverage rates for some customers. It's not the end of the world for the company, but the sluggish economic rebound means that yields will likely remain depressed for some time. If another big disaster like last year's Hurricane Sandy comes around, Travelers could be in trouble.

The U.S. Department of Defense started the week slow Monday, awarding only five new contracts to its defense contractors, and those five worth less than $120 million in aggregate. Of these, the two largest awards went to publicly traded companies, specifically:

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Alex Planes]
PotashCorp's difficulty sustaining its pricing power is underscored by recent reports from sulfate of potash (SOP) producer Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP ) , which charged a hefty premium of almost $300 per ton against Potash Corp's prices for muriate of potash. Efforts to move away from SOP sales seem to be the right choice -- PotashCorp peer Intrepid Potash'sSOP sales fell by 37%, while the average price received has slumped nearly 14% in the last quarter. Even ore miner BHP Billitonhas recently jumped into the fertilizer industry with a $2.6 billion build-out of a potash mine in Canada, which is all but certain to produce further downward pressure on potash prices.

Meridian Growth Fund performance
Compass Minerals(CMP) is a leading producer of rock salt and specialty potash fertilizer. Its unique collection of resource assets has helped the company generate historically high returns on capital. We invested in Compass as we believed that earnings were due to turn after four years of weak road salt demand driven by mild Northeast winters and production problems at its potash mines. During 2013 the potash industry was rocked by the potential collapse of a European cartel, which led to falling potash prices. Facing significant uncertainty for the future of the potash market, we sold the stock. We continue to remain focused on individual stock selection and portfolio construction that identifies quality companies that we believe are experiencing temporary disruptions to their businesses. These disruptions enable us to buy the businesses at attractive prices and provide the portfolio with what we believe is an attractive risk-reward profile for our shareholders.
