Best Dow Dividend Stocks To Invest In 2014

It wasn't exactly Godzilla attacking, but the Japanese Nikkei (NIKKEIINDICES: ^NI225  ) index fell a whopping 7.3% today, taking U.S. markets down with it in the morning. Major European indexes were all down more than 2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) fell nearly 1% this morning. The blue chips battled back, however, to finish just 0.1% lower.

The cause of the Nikkei crash seemed to be a weak manufacturing report from China, and concerns that the Federal Reserve could cut its Quantitative Easing program. The manufacturing report in question was the Chinese purchasing managers' index, which showed its first contraction in seven months, at 49.6, after a reading of 50.4 last month. Economists had expected a figure of 80.3. The Nikkei had also gained 80% in the last seven months, riding the worldwide bull market, so the correction needs to be viewed in that context. Many pundits have expected the stock-buying fever to break, which the Nikkei's crash may be evidence of, but the Dow's resilience today seems to be a sign that American markets are stable, and not inflated.

Software buyers, led by those in the U.S., are increasingly opting for software they can access via the web rather than for packages that take weeks or months to be installed on their own servers. Oracle and Walldorf, Germany-based SAP have both acquired a series of cloud software providers to meet this demand and to keep Salesforce.com Inc. (CRM) and Workday Inc. (WDAY) from taking parts of their core business.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

Motorcar Parts of America (MPAA) is the tiniest entry at only a $208 million market cap. It a bit more specialized, focusing more on alternators, starters and wheel hub assemblies. It also distributes only through the DIY stores. MPAA sits on $100 million in debt and $16 million in cash. It’s cash flow negative and trades at a P/E of 14 on long term growth of 15%. I stay away from this one, given the cash flow situation.

As we reach the end of the first quarter, Tesla Motors (TSLA) is leading the pack with a massive 48% gain, followed by Emerge Energy Services LP (EMES) at 27%. Not too shabby given that the S&P 500 is barely positive on the year.

My pick for 2014 — South African mobile phone giant MTN Group (MTNOY) is off to a slower start, down about 2%. But with nine months left in 2014, I expect MTNOY stock to make a serious run for the top spot. And in fact, in the month of March, it has been the second-best-performing stock in the contest after EMES.

Fortune recently addressed this topic, profiling Emerge Energy Services (NYSE: EMES  ) and its 2012 tax rate, which was 0.5%. Again, the partnership structure forces the company to pass the majority of its cash -- and its tax burden -- onto the limited partners. According to Fortune, Emerge Energy Services paid Uncle Sam absolutely nothing last year. Emerge took its show public this May and has yet to officially announce a distribution, but you can bet investors will see more cash than the federal government did.

Emerge Energy Services (EMES) is engaged in the ownership, operation and acquisition and development of a portfolio of energy service assets. This stock closed up 5.3% at $25.80 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 649,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 204,875

    Volume % Change: 210%

From a technical perspective, EMES ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $24.30 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $16.19 to its all-time high hit on Monday at $26.50. During that move, shares of EMES have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of EMES triggered a breakout here after the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $25.45 to $25.49.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMES as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $25 or at $24.30 and then once it sustains a move or close above its new all-time high at $26.50 with volume that hits near or above 204,875 shares. If we get that move soon, then EMES will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $30 to $35.

Most advisers are quick to spell out uncorrelated returns as the primary benefit of alternatives but few understand how to conduct comparative analysis. The tendency is to look at the funds' return and volatility; which starts one off on the wrong path. With alternatives, it's a two part process in which the first is simply qualification and then the second is measuring the material benefit for your portfolio. The necessary condition is uncorrelated, or non-systemic, returns. Without this, the investor is better off simply selecting a traditional long-only fund with the highest risk-adjusted prospects. Once you have identified a group of uncorrelated funds, the second step involves the tradeoff between return and correlatio

It was only a matter of time. Last month BASF (NASDAQOTH: BASFY  ) , the world's largest chemical company, announced three separate developments that will thrust it from being a mediocre player in industrial enzymes to a dominant force. BASF acquired Henkel's detergent enzyme technology, licensed the C1 biotechnology platform from Dyadic, and befriended Direvo Industrial Biotechnology from Germany for a next-generation animal feed enzyme.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Firms across Germany's DAX have caught on. BASF (NASDAQOTH: BASFY  ) shares haven't had a great year so far, but the world's largest chemicals firm is looking around the world for growth. The company seeks to double its customer base in the Asia-Pacific region by 2020 in its chemicals and materials business, projecting sales in Asia to double from last year's 12.5 million euros to 25 million euros by that year. That kind of global growth will benefit investors, and the less BASF and other German stocks rely on Europe for sales, the better shareholders will do.

Small cap biotech Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ARNA) soared yesterday and last Friday on earnings as well as news that the company will expand its marketing and supply agreement with Japan based Eisai for its BELVIQ (lorcaserin HCl) obesity drug, meaning it might be time to take a closer look at other biotech stocks like Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: OREX), EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ: ETRM) and VIVUS, Inc (NASDAQ: VVUS) that are in the business of treating obesity. Specifically, Arena Pharmaceuticals announced an expanded agreement providing Eisai with exclusive commercialization rights for all countries worldwide (except for South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Israel and New Zealand) for BELVIQ where Arena will receive an upfront payment of $60 million and is eligible to receive up to a total of $176.5 million in regulatory and development milestone payments - an increase of $123 million from the amount remaining available under the previous agreement. BELVIQ was approved in June 2012, but didn't reach the market until June 2013 due to logistical concerns like classification by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Its alsoapproved for use in adults who are obese or who are overweight and who have at least one serious medical condition (e.g. diabetes or high cholesterol).

I should mention that we have recently added Orexigen Therapeutics to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as an extremely speculative biotech bet because itslead obesity drug candidate has the potential to beapproved by September 11th of this year.
